Artist's Statement

Art

For many years, I have been inspired by Japanese culture, art, architecture, and people. The mystical and simplistic quality of Japanese characters motivated me to combine elements of the characters with abstract representational images of people, animals, trees, flowers, and leave it to the imagination of the viewer to decipher the hidden meanings within each piece.  I utilize various modern tools and technologies to create unique imagery, and usually draw the “character, line, and shape” only once.

Major artistic influences include Matisse, Monet, Rauschenberg, Kandinsky, Miro, Calder, Brancusi, Hiroshige and many other artists.

Three main strategies are employed in my work, which primarily focuses on sensuality, humor, love, and the intensity of feelings at the moment of creation.  First, Japanese Kanji character abstraction imagery.  Second, Japanese style organic representational art, such as drawing flowers, trees, and other nature-oriented subject matter. Finally, a mixed media approach, which delves into abstract textural, geometric, and organic imagery combining “graffiti” airbrush style strokes. Some of this last group employ whimsical cartoonish characters and Paschesque amorphous shapes.
